Free preview of the Outdoor Channel on DIRECTV until May 19

I suppose it’s not terribly surprising, but the Outdoor Channel is free on DIRECTV until May 19. I say it’s not surprising because The Outdoor Channel is the sister to The Sportsman Channel, which is having its own free preview at the same time.

It’s like the Sportsman Channel but…

I wanted to try to figure out where the Outdoor Channel and the Sportsman Channel were different. I would expect that The Outdoor Channel would focus on being outside and not necessarily hunting. But, it seems like the two channels really share a similar audience. Both cater to the person who likes to be outside and hunt, although it seems like The Outdoor Channel does seem to focus a bit on the overall lifestyle, as opposed to the actual hunting technique.

The channel also seems to take up a bit of the mantle of the now-departed NRA TV. It doesn’t focus as much on the politics of gun ownership. Rather it seems to be more about gun care and the sport of gun ownership. That makes sense for their market too.

It offers beautiful views of the outdoors

The one thing we can all enjoy on this channel is its imagery. At a time when a lot of people are feeling very constrained by their indoor surroundings, it’s good to see those images of nature. I’m sure that we’ll all be able to venture out soon, but in the meantime it’s good for the soul to see the beauty of nature that surrounds all of us. Sunny days will come again soon but until then you can see them on television.
