Don’t worry, I won’t judge you for having a land line. Some people do. Some people just can’t give up the feeling of security. I totally understand. Landline service is still really dominant out there. Yes it true that no one much talks about it anymore. And it’s even true that a lot of houses are being built without landline wiring. But land lines have been with us for over 100 years. They’re not going away. They’re an essential part of the emergency network and they’re used by people all over the country.
Still, those folks who do have landline phones perfer cordless. Cordless phones are still popular because they offer the flexibility of a cell phone without paying a large bill. And for most people, the call quality is excellent and you can use the phone up to a mile away from the house.
Here’s the fact
Cordless phones, like all forms of broadcasting, have limitations. The signals can be blocked by wiring in your walls. Interference from appliances may make it hard to understand the person on the other end of the line. These are the same problems you’ll encounter if you are using a cell phone.
Unfortunately, there’s a difference. If your cordless phone isn’t reaching all the way through the house, a cell booster isn’t going to help you.
It’s all about the frequencies
Cordless phones use the consumer bands of 900, 2400, and 5800MHz, which are designed for very short range communications. They’re still licensed by the FCC, but not regulated as heavily because they’re designed for very low power devices like your cordless phone. Cell boosters boost signal in the 600, 700, 800, 1900 and 2100MHz bands and therefore don’t work for cordless phones. It’s designed that way.
It’s not like you couldn’t have a booster for cordless phones but it would also amplify a lot of other signals that you wouldn’t want amplified. A lot of cordless phones operate in that 2400MHz range (also called the 2.4GHz range.) This group of frequencies was established for consumer use and you’ll find everything from remote controls to microwave ovens using them. Unfortunately this increases the possibility of interference. This is why sometimes you get slow Wi-Fi while someone in the office is making popcorn. The same problem can cause static on cordless phone connections.
If your cordless phone doesn’t reach everywhere, consider changing the battery or buying a newer 5.8GHz model which has better range. Because demand for land line phones is down, prices for them have dropped and it certainly shouldn’t be a problem to find the one you want.
